Life in the Big City

Hello, friends!

About a week away from finishing v0.32, which will include two new adventure modules, ten new travel events, and a bunch of vignettes, along with various minor fixes and enhancements.

This month, I’ll talk a little about cities. But first, a look at some progress on the overland:

Here we can see a number of regions that have been unlocked for travel shown in color. Adjacent locked territories are in sepia, and more distant locales are under cloud cover. I’ve done a first pass at showing region names here, color coded by political affiliation. Regional borders haven’t been implemented yet.

If we zoom in a bit and select one of these cities, we’ll get the following interface:

Here we see the city of Axia, and underneath the name we can see a representation of the agents who are idling here. Once a city is active and available to you, your agents can be transferred there to perform jobs or prepare for a new expedition.

The city functions from left to right are:

  • Jobs: These are tasks that 1-6 agents can perform over time for a variety of results. Some jobs earn money or other resources. Other jobs unlock new opportunities on the overland.

  • Storage: This lets you view whatever resources and equipment you might have left in a dusty storage locker between quests. You may also ship items from here back to headquarters or to another city. This function is only available if you have a trade office here.

  • Market: Go shopping for equipment or other valuables.

  • Roster: Get a more detailed view of available agents in this city.

  • Transfer Agents: Send agents from this city to any other active city.

  • Plan Expedition: Gather supplies and set out with an intrepid crew for glory and treasure!

You might also notice a little golden satchel above the city name. This indicates that you have established a trade office here.

Trade offices are usually established by paying some money and performing a specific job. They increase your income and provide a number of other conveniences for your operations in the area. It is also possible to upgrade your office into an outpost, which will provide additional benefits.

Still figuring out how to balance the economy, by the way, so that +15 figure is probably going to change.

And that’s all for now. Thanks for stopping by! More to come next month.
